Alba Rd. is arguably the steepest road in Santa Cruz County. It ascends over 2000 feet in less than 4 miles, but the 10% average gradient doesn't reflect the actual difficulty of this climb. The profile probably looks like a staircase. There are 5% gradient sections wedged between sections that range between 15-20% gradient. For you counting at home, that's ascending upwards 15-20 feet per 100 feet forward.
Every once in a while, I commute into work via Alba Rd. Today was one of those days. Commuting to work by way of Alba Rd = dumb. So, by the transitive property of equalities, if Alba Rd = Steep, then commuting to work by way of steep = dumb. Okay, that was dumb...
Ride safely and happy trails.
